Atang is based on the life of Atang de la Rama, National Artist for Theatre and Queen of Tagalog Sarsuwela. This new work juxtaposes all the different perspectives on our national artist - from her family, to her friends, to what the scholars tell, to her literary works and Amado Hernandez, her husband's poetry. Atang is an attempt to reconcile historical myths and historical facts theatrically. FILIPINO AUTHOR WINS MAN ASIAN LITERARY PRIZE 2008

Hong Kong– A panel of three internationally acclaimed authors and experienced literary judges named Filipino author Miguel Syjuco winner of the 2008 Man Asian Literary Prize for his novel Ilustrado, a fictional account of a young Filipino caught within a notorious scandal spanning over the Philippine history.

The panel of judges for the 2008 prize praised Ilustrado:

"The shortlist for the Man Asian prize testifies to the great vitality of the novel in Asian societies undergoing hectic and unexpected transformations. In the end, we had to choose; and Ilustrado seems to us to possess formal ambition, linguistic inventiveness and sociopolitical insight in the most satisfying measure. Brilliantly conceived, and stylishly executed, it covers a large and tumultuous historical period with seemingly effortless skill. It is also ceaselessly entertaining, frequently raunchy, and effervescent with humour."

The prize winner was announced at a celebratory dinner at The Peninsula Hong Kong. Miguel Syjuco was awarded USD 10,000.

Ilustrado was selected from shortlist of five:
Kavery Nambisan, The Story that Must Not be Told
Siddharth Dhanvant Shanghvi, The Lost Flamingoes of Bombay
Miguel Syjuco, Ilustrado
Yu Hua, Brothers
Alfred A. Yuson, The Music Child

BENEDICT ANDERSON RETURNS TO UP , WILL TALK ON RIZAL AGAIN

Benedict Anderson will give a lecture on Rizal on November 19 at the C.M. Recto Hall, Bulwagang Rizal in UP Diliman, Quezon City. The lecture will be from 230 to 430 p.m. The UP Diliman Third World Studies Center, College of Arts and Lettersl and UP Office of the Chancellor helped to bring back the acclaimed author of Imagined Communities which has sold over a quarter of a million copies. His last talk filled the Recto Hall to overflowing, with social science and literary students wanting to hear the man whose thoughts on nationalism have forged new areas of study.

According to the TWSC, in the 19th century more and more people thought about the other not geographically--distant/barbarian--but temporally-- modern/backward. For the colonial world, this opened the way for shame in being backward but also the hope of catching up and surpassing. Anderson will talk on El Filibusterismo in this general context, especially focusing on Rizal's unique time-machine methods.

UP MOBILE THEATER REVIVED

The curtains part to reveal a small stage with beautifully-crafted black and white furniture. Actors in colorful ternos appear onstage to perform a household comedy of manners – Kailangan Isang Tsaperon (Wanted: A Chaperon) – a classic one-act comedy by Wilfrido Ma. Guerrero.

The performers belong to the revived theater group that Guerrero himself started in 1962. Now called Lakbay Dulaang UP mobile theater, the troupe is continuing where its predecessor had left off more than 20 years ago: traveling the country and bringing theater to the people.

Guerrero died in 1995.

The concept of the mobile theater is simple—with a retractable set and a few actors and crew, the troupe will journey to different provinces in the country to entertain the communities. In the early 60s when they started, the country's economy was in the doldrums and the crime rate, alongside population, increased.

Guerrero wrote in the 1964 UP Alumni Yearbook that their performances were not merely for art's sake. "I feel that people in the provinces have a hard enough time, so our aim is to make them laugh and with a message in every play."

4TH GAWAD EMMAN LACABA

Gawad Emmanuel Lacaba  is the annual literary contest of the College Editors Guild of the Philippines-Luzon.

Emmanuel "Emman" Lacaba, great late poet, dramatist and a student journalist, was an editor of The   Guidon , the official student publication of the   Ateneo de Manila University , one of the founding campus publications of the Guild. Lacaba fought against the dictatorship during the   Martial Law   and died as a martyr at the age of 27. He was also the brother of renowned Filipino writer Jose 'Pete' Lacaba.

Lacaba has often been compared to the   French poet Arthur Rimbaud , a fact he himself alluded to in one of his poems, "Open Letters to Filipino Artists", where he told of his being called "the brown Rimbaud." Like Rimbaud, Lacaba started writing poetry at the tender age of 14, and still like him, lost his life before he reached his 40th   year.

If there is something Emman Lacaba is most noted for, it is for having been a writer-activist. He was a poet, essayist, playwright, fictionist, and scriptwriter who joined the protest movement in his student days and later lost his life as an armed revolutionary.
